Yes there is a need for housing where the former McMillen Apartments once where.
But this deal where it will cost $12.42 million to build 44 apartments is stupid. The idea is not stupid, the cost is. The cost figures $ 281,818 per each apartment.
The word apartment usually means a bunch of different living areas (44) packed into usually one confined area, (like sardines in a can), usually without garages. Apartments mean rentals, and not the people owning them.
If you take $12.42 million and divide it by 44, that’s $281,818 per apartment.
Around a year ago when there was a developer in town talking about building. I mentioned to the councilman for that area that I had a lead on a company that would build individual homes between 1,400-1,650 square feet with three bedrooms, two full baths, individual laundry room, kitchen, dining room, family room and a two-car garage (not carports). Also, each family would have a fenced in grass yard for security. Each home would have a security light on the front and back of the home.
My plan would cost around $170,000 per unit. Also, these would be high quality homes.
I was told that someone from a church was already going to develop something there for the neighbors.
My plan also would have called for a playground area and a building for meetings. This could also possibility be tied into a local church organization in the area.
My plan would have been designed for mainly single-family parents or grand parents raising their grandkids because the parent are not around. Again these would have been homes, not apartments.
The city said they would provide the land for special cases like this at no charge.
