Need your driveway plowed? Don’t we all after the recent snow. Luckily, now there’s an app for that.Cuttly is a multiplatform smartphone app created by Fort Wayne native and resident Clinton Beck. Cuttly, available for both the Android or iPhone, provides people with snow plowing or lawn mowing services with the simple click of a button thanks to a network of existing partner business that alerts the nearest service provider using GPS tracking software.
Beck, who built the company with his brothers and close group of friends, began researching the business model after his first experience using Uber on a business trip a few years ago. Uber, an app-based GPS transportation network and taxi company, allows people to hail a taxi within immediate proximity within minutes.
Beck loved the idea and the experience. Then he wondered, how can he develop something that would be useful to busy folks in the suburbs or a town like Fort Wayne?Serendipitously, while away on business Beck’s lawn was becoming a wreck and he had trouble finding someone to help mow it quickly and without a summerlong contract, then the idea hit him. He would develop an app to quickly, affordably and efficiently partner customers with service professionals in the area.
After downloading the app, folks can request their service by signing in and creating a profile, then submitting the type of service and the address. Then, through a secure website, customers will pay for the app directly using a credit or debit card.
Once the order is placed, the app will notified which Cuttly Pro, the local service provider, has accepted the order. It will also send notifications when the pro has arrived at the location, when the work has started and when the work is finished.
One of the most unique features of the app is the photo and review features. When the job is completed, the service provider will then send the customer a photo of the finished product. Then people are able to write a review, good or bad, of the service and the business.
Beck said this allows for Cuttly to keep an eye on the service professionals and make sure they do quality work by holding them accountable to the customer.
“When it’s done you can verify the job’s been done and everything looks good. You can also rate your provider at the end. So we not only make sure our professionals are good, but we also allow our customers an opportunity to rate them as well. We just want to make sure we continue to have the best providers out there,” he said.
Customer Wendy Geiger used the app for the first time after a quick google search.
She said her husband was out of town and she had her daughter had just spent two and a half hours shoveling the driveway. When it came time for another go at it, she looked online, found Cuttly, made the request and within minutes she received a call from the service provider.
“They actually called me to let me know that everybody was busy and wanted to make sure I didn’t need the snow moved right away. Then I told them it would be better to wait later. I was really happy with that because in the past I have called services and they said you just have to take what you get, you know? So I was really happy with it,” Geiger said.
Geiger said two service men arrived, one shoveled the detail areas and one plowed the driveway. Within a half an hour, they were finished.
“I would say to use the app because it’s simple and secure. They’re a friendly and convenient service. It cost me $35. It was nice to be inside where it’s warm and watch them do the work, it was great,” she said.
It’s an app that people can use anywhere, too. Someone could be on vacation in Florida and request somebody come out and plow their home in Fort Wayne. It doesn’t matter where the customer is located. One can simply can put any address and have the services done as long as Cuttly is provided in the area.
That’s certainly what Fort Wayne Cuttly customer Rob Watson, COO of Collier Financial did on Super Bowl weekend. He requested a snow plow for an elderly couple who are close friends of the family.
While the app has only been launched since January this year, the team of 10 developers and six operators worked throughout 2014 to make sure the app was ready for 2015.
Currently, the app is available in eight cities around the country including: Fort Wayne, South Bend, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Mich., Minneapolis, Boston, Providence and Newark, New Jersey. As of now, there’s more than 130 Cuttly Pros helping customers in these cities.
He said ideal growth would be to expand to different cities, not necessarily offer more services because the landscaping industry is such a big, attractive market. Beck said theres more than 67,000 landscaping businesses in the U.S. of which about 80 percent have five or less employees.
The app is not only about helping residents, but it’s also about helping small business owners in the landscaping industry have the ability to better connect and reach their market.
“For our pros, it’s supplemental income. It’s a secured payment so the customer's information is charged right away and the pros get paid immediately so they don’t have to chase down invoices or payments or anything like that. That’s another major advantage of the system,” Beck said.
Now, after only a month after launch, Beck is expecting the business to grow tremendously.
“We want to grow quickly, too. I want to be in at least two dozen different cities and we want to be doing very well by the summer time. Based on what we’ve seen in the past couple of weeks, that should be easily attainable for us. It’s a lot of work, but we are really excited about growing a tech company right here in Fort Wayne because it’s where I was born and raised. It’s fun working with my brothers, close friends and smart people,” Beck said.
