Three hurt in DeKalb County head-on crash

A head-on collision on Indiana 8 in DeKalb County resulted in multiple injuries Tuesday afternoon.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department responded to the two-vehicle accident at about 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 7400 block of Indiana 8, where officers discovered three people suffering from injuries from the head-on collision, according to a police report.

Police report a westbound teal 2007 Ford driven by Austin Ortiz of Butler crossed left of center into the eastbound lane as an eastbound red 2012 Chevrolet driven by Eric Rice of Edgerton, Ohio, veered into the westbound lane to avoid the collision. Police believe Ortiz corrected back into the westbound lane and applied the brakes simultaneously when the Chevrolet was attempting to avoid the collision, which occurred in the westbound lane.

Airbags were deployed in both vehicles, and Ortiz had to be extricated from his vehicle. All occupants wore seatbelts.

Ortiz was airlifted to an area hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

Rice and his passenger were transported to a hospital by ambulance. Rice was treated and released, however, and his passenger was listed in fair condition by hospital doctors.

Concord Fire Department, DeKalb EMS and Indiana State Police assisted the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.
