Pair collecting clothing to help other students dress for graduation They collected dress shirts and ties to help young men meet code for attire

Thanks to Madison and Grant Wallace, senior guys should have no problem meeting dress code requirements for Fort Wayne Community Schools’ graduation ceremonies June 9 and 10 at Memorial Coliseum.

About two months ago, Madison, 18, and Grant, 17, who are brother and sister, were talking about the upcoming FWCS graduation ceremonies and how some young men may not have money to buy a dress shirt and tie, said Madison, who graduates June 10 from Snider High School. FWCS requires senior male students to wear a shirt and tie to their school’s graduation ceremony.

So Madison and Grant, who just completed his junior year at Snider, decided to organize a dress shirt and tie collection drive to help out.

On Thursday, they delivered more than 200 shirts and about 200 ties to FWCS’ clothing bank on Catalpa Street. Their delivery also included six suits, a couple of blazers and a couple of pairs of dress slacks, Grant said.

“We didn’t think we would get this much at all,” he said.

To encourage clothing donations, they sent flyers to all FWCS schools, Madison said. Old National Bank branches also participated in the drive.

Any male senior graduating from an FWCS high school who can’t afford a dress shirt and tie now can contact the clothing bank at 467-2520 to make an appointment to pick out what he needs, said Wendy Hoering, FWCS’ homeless liaison coordinator. Her management responsibilities include the clothing bank.

Graduating seniors who can’t make it to the clothing bank or who don’t have time to pick out a shirt and tie also can use phone or voicemail to give their shirt size information to the clothing bank coordinator, who will pick out a shirt and tie for the student, Hoering said.

The student then can pick up the items at the clothing bank, or the clothing bank coordinator can have the clothes shipped to the student’s high school, if the school is a more convenient place for pickup, she said.

Several young men graduating next week already have called the clothing bank seeking help with a shirt and tie, Hoering said, so the Wallaces’ donations will be a big help. <br>
