Woman in fatal crash identified

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified a woman pronounced dead after a two-vehicle crash Friday morning on Lafayette Street.

Virginia Smith, 83, of Fort Wayne was a passenger in a car involved in the crash at 7:35 a.m. Friday on Lafayette at Pontiac Street, according to a news release. Fort Wayne Police said earlier that a front-seat passenger, now identified as Smith, was in a car that was westbound on Pontiac when the driver had a medical problem. The car struck a pickup that was northbound on Lafayette. The car’s driver was trapped and had to be freed by firefighters.

The driver, a passenger in the rear seat and the pickup’s driver were all taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Smith was unresponsive when she was taken to the hospital, where a doctor pronounced her dead. She died of blunt-force trauma caused by the crash, and her death was ruled an accident.

Smith’s death was ruled the 13th traffic fatality in Allen County. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the coroner’s office.
