Coroner identifies latest Fort Wayne homicide victim

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of a man found shot to death Thursday night in Fort Wayne while a second victim was listed in critical condition.

The autopsy has been completed and notification has been made to the next of kin for Willie Alonzo Smith Sr., 47, of Fort Wayne.

At 11:54 p.m., Fort Wayne Police officers were dispatched to the 3300 block of Winter Street to investigate a report of gunshots in the area. Police found Smith, who had gunshot wounds. Medics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, investigators learned that a second victim had been taken to a local hospital by a private vehicle. Early Friday morning that second man, who also had been shot, was listed in critical condition at the hospital. That person’s identity has not been released.

Smith died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled the 26th homicide in Allen County for 2017.

Detectives have determined that both shootings are related, but exactly how they are related isn’t clear yet. The investigation continues.
