Fremont man thrown from vehicle in DeKalb County near-deer crash

A Fremont man has cuts after he swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting a deer on a Hamilton road Sunday evening and was ejected in a crash with a pole.

Mark Firestine, 62, was treated for cuts to his back, neck and head, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department officer Ben Browand.

Firestine was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier at 8:40 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of County Road 61 when he tried to avoid the deer and ended up striking a pole and being ejected from the vehicle’s rear window, according to Browand’s release.

Firestine was not wearing his seat belt and was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by DeKalb EMS, according to the release.

The Indiana State Police and Hamilton Police and Fire departments also helped at the scene.
