Fort Wayne Police: Man shot at bar limped off to hospital

Fort Wayne Police who were called to a shooting Friday night at a Wells Street bar followed a blood trail but found the injured suspect had taken himself to the hospital.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting that happened at the Pantry, 1501 Wells St. They were near Orchard and High streets when they saw a blood trail on the sidewalk in the 2500 block of Orchard, and residents said they saw a male limping who said he had been shot but he kept walking/running south on Orchard, according to a police report.

Officers followed the blood trail to High, then dispatched a K-9 that tracked the trail to the 1200 block of Clark Street.

Dispatch informed the officers that the suspect had walked into a hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot. Near the emergency room, an officer saw a nurse pushing a wheelchair with a man who matched a description of the one involved in a battery at the Pantry. The man had a white trash bag over his right foot.

The man gave the officer a false name and said the injury was caused by fireworks, but later admitted to his identity, saying he had a warrant and feared going to jail, according to the report.

Police arrested the man, Chad Allen Swihart, and took him to Allen County Lockup.
