New Haven to ‘smoke test’ sewers this week

Weather permitting, the city of New Haven will perform smoke testing on the sanitary sewer system in the Woodridge subdivision (bordered Werling, Moeller and Hartzell roads) Dec. 7 through Dec. 14. The smoke is non-toxic and will not harm residents or their pets. If residents receive smoke within their homes or have concerns they should contact Utility Superintendent Dave Jones at 748-7056.

Director of Engineering Keith Schlegel said the evaluation is necessary because during heavy rains sewers can back up, allowing raw sewage into some basements and causing manholes to overflow.
