Weather updates, cancellations: Allen County under travel advisory for freezing rain
Due to the prediction of continued icy conditions, all Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Gymnastics in Motion classes scheduled for Friday evening are canceled.
Fort Wayne Community Schools is closed Friday. The school makeup day will be March 16.
East Allen County Schools and Northwest Allen County Schools also canceled classes.
Southwest Allen County Schools is closed and is using Friday as an e-learning day.
A winter weather travel advisory has been issued Friday for Allen County by Bernie Beier, director of the Allen County Office of Homeland Security.
Rain changed to freezing rain and sleet during the morning commute, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions.
City of Fort Wayne street department trucks were on every route at around 4 a.m. and are continuing to salt and plow, according to city spokesman Frank Suarez in an email.
Drivers are urged to Use caution when traveling throughout the county, Beier said in a news release.
At 7 a.m. the Indiana Department of Homeland Security activated the State of Indiana Emergency Operations Center to monitor incoming winter weather conditions across the state.
The center will be staffed by representatives from state Homeland Security, the Indiana Department of Transportation, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indiana State Police, the Indiana State Department of Health, the Indiana Department of Correction, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, the Indiana National Guard and the American Red Cross.
The National Weather Service forecasts 1-3 inches of snow for northern Indiana with temperatures falling into the teens and lower 20s can be expected today with wind chills to around zero late this afternoon and tonight.
