Fort Wayne girl and her family going to Walt Disney World through Bert’s Big Adventure program
A 9-year-old Fort Wayne girl and her family will enjoy a five-day trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., through the Bert’s Big Adventure program.
Courtney Brower is one of 13 children with chronic or terminal illnesses accepted to go on this trip, a news release said. The trip is provided by “The Bert Show” radio program, an Atlanta-based radio show that is syndicated nationally and airs during the morning drive time on local station WJFX, Hot 107.9-FM.
Courtney has been diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, her profile said on the Bert’s Big Adventure website, https://bertsbigadventure.org.
Ehlers Danlos Syndrome includes a group of connective tissue disorders involving joints that stretch farther than normal, skin that stretches more than usual and tissue fragility, the website said. People with Ehlers Danlos suffer skin tears and bruises easily, and their wounds may have problems with healing.
There is no cure for the condition, the website said, but symptoms can be treated and some preventive measures are available.
“The Bert Show” started its nonprofit Bert’s Big Adventure program in 2003, it said on the Bert’s Big Adventure website. Since then, the project has served 173 children and their families with Walt Disney World visits and follow-up programs.
To apply for the Bert’s Big Adventure trip, children must be between the ages of 5 and 12, live in “The Bert Show” radio listening area, prove financial need and have never been to Walt Disney World, the news release said.
