Fort Wayne Fire Department firefighters found two people dead while battling a blaze that burned two houses and collapsed one roof Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to a reported house fire at 5:19 a.m. Friday at 1211 Huestis Ave. They arrived 3 minutes later and found the house heavily involved with fire, which had extended to the house at 1207 Huestis, according to a news release. Firefighters called for a second alarm and began putting out the fires in both structures.

Firefighters entered both houses to evacuate any occupants but were driven back by the flames at 1211 Huestis, according to the release. The roof of one building collapsed shortly afterward. Firefighters eventually got into the home and found two people dead.

Firefighters continued to put out hidden fires hours later and were investigating the cause of the fire. No firefighters were injured. The Fort Wayne Police Department, Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, American Electric Power, Northern Indiana Public Service Co. and Neighborhood Code Compliance assisted at the scene.

The block remained closed to traffic early Friday afternoon while firefighters worked at the scene.
