Allen County flu deaths have risen to 13, according to Indiana State Department of Health

The Indiana State Department of Health’s weekly influenza report Friday lists 13 flu-related deaths in Allen County.

The state health department continues to urge people to take precautions against the illness, which has claimed 167 lives statewide this flu season during the reporting period October-Feb. 3. The numbers are recorded if either a laboratory confirmed the result or flu is listed as the cause of death on a death certificate.

The department reported last week that Allen County had nine flu-related deaths.

Others reporting flu deaths are Marion (13); Hamilton (9); Adams, St. Joseph and Shelby (6 each); and Floyd, Lake, Morgan, Vanderburgh and Tippecanoe (5 each).

Allen County Health Commissioner Deborah McMahan has recommended that in addition to handwashing as a flu prevention, those who feel unwell should stay home from school or work to prevent the spread to others.
