‘You about to get … shot over these pots and pans,’ Dollar General thief tells clerk, according to Fort Wayne Police report

A bewildered Dollar General clerk was met with a threat of being shot over stolen pots and pans Wednesday afternoon.

Fort Wayne Police responded at 2:52 p.m. to an armed robbery at Dollar General, 3121 E. State Blvd.

According to a police report, the clerk said the following occurred:

The clerk was ringing up items for a man she had waited on previously when he picked up a couple of pots and pans, said “thank you; have a nice day” and walked out the door.

The clerk followed him to a car and told him he needed to pay for the items. He responded by opening the car door, putting his right hand in his pocket and saying, “You better get your (expletive) back inside before you get shot.”

“What is wrong with you? It’s pots and pans,” the clerk told the thief.

“You about to get your (expletive) shot over these pots and pans,” he replied and appeared to be pulling out a weapon.

The clerk went inside the store to call the police, who missed the thief by a minute for two as he drove off in a silver Chevrolet Impala that left westbound on East State. The vehicle had a “no expiration” handicap tag hanging from the rearview mirror and a black license plate bracket on the front with no license plate on it.

Police obtained video that showed the vehicle as well as the theft suspect, whom the clerk described as black, in his mid- to upper 40s with gray in his beard. On the video he appeared to be wearing white shoes, dark or black pants, a light gray- or tan-colored jacket with a white undershirt, and what appeared to be a tan-colored beanie-style hat.
