Fort Wayne firefighters rescue 1 person, 2 others escape unharmed from West Wind Apartments blaze
Fort Wayne firefighters rescued a person from a third-floor balcony by using a fire department ladder during a blaze Thursday night at the West Wind Apartments.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called at 8:20 p.m. to 2226 Point West Drive, according to a news release. Firefighters arrived 4 minutes later to find a blaze in a ground-floor apartment. Some firefighters attacked the blaze while others helped to search and evacuate the building. Two other people had gotten out and two cats died. The fire department had the blaze under control in 20 minutes. The fire caused heavy damage and its cause is under investigation.
The American Red Cross is assisting residents who were affected by the fire.
