David C. Van Gilder, a partner in the Fort Wayne law office of Van Gilder & Trzynka, is one of the three finalists for the upcoming vacancy on the Court of Appeals of Indiana, third district.

The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will submit his name along with those of the Hon. Steven L. Hostetler and the Hon. Elizabeth F. Tavitas to Gov. Eric Holcomb in the upcoming days, according to a news release. After officially receiving the list of nominees, the governor has 60 days to make his selection.

According to the Indiana Constitution and state statute, the seven-member commission recruit and select candidates to fill vacancies on Indiana appellate courts. A position on the Court of Appeals is available because Judge Michael Barnes will retire early this summer.

The commission considered applicants’ legal education, writings, reputation in the practice of law, and other pertinent information, according to the release. It also conducted in-person public interviews of the 12 applicants. It announced six finalists in early May, and the finalists were again publicly interviewed. After deliberations in executive session, the commission publicly voted to send the three nominees to the governor.
