Fire battled at northwest Fort Wayne area club on Lima Road
The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a blaze at 12:54 p.m. Wednesday at Club Royal, 9439 Lima Road. A passing driver called in the fire, and crews arrived in 3 minutes, according to a fire department news release.
Marty Bender, a Fort Wayne Police Department deputy chief who was at the scene, said he saw smoke from the blaze all the way from Fort Wayne International Airport, about 15 miles away.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire, high heat, and smoke that prevented them from going inside the nightclub, according to the release. Crews had to tackle the blaze from the outside, and two firefighters were spraying water from truck aerial ladders over the building, which still had flames coming from it a half-hour after crews responded.
Crews got the fire under control at 1:47 p.m. No one was inside the building, which wasn’t scheduled to open until 7 p.m. No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. The Fort Wayne Police Department restricted traffic in the area and workers with the Fort Wayne Water Department, Three Rivers Ambulance Authority and Neighborhood Code Compliance also responded.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. The building had heavy smoke, fire and water damage. The building appeared destroyed as did a vehicle parked next to it.
