Thurgood Marshall Leadership Academy charter school reveals its new location in Fort Wayne
The Thurgood Marshall Leadership Academy will open this year at Come As You Are Community Church, 7910 S. Anthony Blvd., which also hosted the city’s first charter school beginning about 15 years ago.
Thurgood Marshall academy officials signed the lease for space at Come As You Are on July 9 but delayed announcing the location to avoid confusing families preparing to go through the enrollment registration process at that time, school board President Sheila Moore said in July.
Thurgood Marshall academy, which opened in August 2012, operated all prior school years in the former Zion Lutheran Academy building, 2310 Weisser Park Ave., on the grounds of Zion Lutheran Church, 2313 S. Hanna St.
The church is adjacent to the campus that includes the Fort Wayne Urban League, which started Thurgood Marshall academy through the state of Indiana’s charter school program.
The academy, which serves children in kindergarten through grade 8, provides bus transportation for many of its students, Moore said previously. Children living near Zion Lutheran now will be able to ride the bus to the new location at Come As You Are.
As of mid-July, the academy had about 140 students pre-registered for the upcoming school year, Moore said previously. The new location can accommodate 250 students, so there is room for growth, she said.
The Indiana Department of Education lists Timothy L. Johnson Academy as located now at 4625 Werling Drive in Fort Wayne, where it serves children in kindergarten through grade 5.
