THIS DAY IN HISTORY: August 10 in photos

1950 - Virginia Tompkins, right, of R.R. 9., Fort Wayne, buttons the back of the dress worn by Linda Koester, 3. Tompkins, a member of the Lucky Hoosier 4-H Club, was an entrant in the clothing division at the 1950 Allen County 4-H Fair at Woodburn Community Park. Tompkins had made not only Linda's dress, but her own - and the two were identical.
1994 - Chris Smiley, a witness to the recent drive-by fatal shooting in the area of Weisser Park, watches a game of pick up basketball Wednesday afternoon at the parks basketball courts.
1995 - Practice uniforms untouched by sweat and grass stain, Thunder team members head out to their first practice.
1997 - Lake Wawasee resident Ed Bentz holds a cluster of zebra mussels. The mussels get into boat engines and the water systems of homes, causing all sorts of problems.
2000 - Debra Herscher, a server at Hall's Restaurant at Triangle Park, arranges the plates and silverware on her tray before serving them up to her lunchtime customers.
2003 - Nana Sakinovic is surrounded by dancers as they rehearse "Dulsa" for the upcoming Bosnian Festival.
2005 - World Market, 4310 Coldwater Road, features a selection of imported wines. The store opens Thursday.
2006 - Thea Scott, 5, waits patiently as for her vaccination shots while her mother reads information about the vaccines at the Super Shot clinic held at St. Therese Catholic Church.
2007 - A man inspects a small plane that crashed into a cornfield off of Bluffton Road on Friday evening, well short of a runway at Fort Wayne International Airport nearby. The Cessna 210 D had only a pilot inside, who was unharmed and refused medical attention. Nobody else was reportedly involved in the crash. While attempting landings and takeoffs, the plane's engine went out, the pilot told airport authorities. He touched the plane onto Bluffton Road so it would bounce over a ditch before it crashed into the field.
2009 - Scott Pieri hits out of the sand trap on No. 12 during Monday's final round of the Fort Wayne men's city golf tournament. Pieri pressured leader Erich Johnston but missed a 20-foot putt by two inches on the final hole that could have forced a playoff, and the defending champion finished in second place by one stroke.
2012 - Carrie Harris, left, and Marsha Hicks have added five more stylists and seen a big increase in walk-in customers this summer since they moved their business, Tangles Salon & Spa, to Georgetown Square Shopping Center
2013 - Gabriel Quintana of the TinCaps gets ready to hit against Lake County on Wednesday at Parkview Field.
2017 - U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, R-4th, addresses reporters at Allen County Republican headquarters Wednesday after announcing he will be a candidate next year for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Democrat Joe Donnelly.
