Another priest added to Fort Wayne Diocese’s abuse list
The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend has added another name to the list of priests credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.
Gerald Funcheon, who was a member of the Crosier Congregation, not a diocesan priest, is on the list of those credibly accused of abuse published by the Crosier Fathers. He has been added to the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend list because of a credible accusation of abuse that took place while assigned in the diocese. The diocese will be keeping its list of credibly accused priests on its web site and will update the list as warranted.
In 2014 The News-Sentinel reported that two sexual abuse lawsuits had been filed against Funcheon in Minnesota. One lawsuit accused Funcheon of sexually abusing four then-boys from 1970-1974 while they attended St. Odilia Catholic Church and School in Shoreview, Minn. The second alleged he abused a man then about age 13 in 1984 while Funcheon served at Palma High School in Salinas, Calif. Funcheon may have abused more than 50 children during the past few decades while serving in Indiana, California, Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota and elsewhere, attorneys for the plaintiffs said at that time.
And seven years earlier an Indianapolis man then in his 50 claimed in Allen Superior Court that Funcheon had molested him repeatedly in 1965 while at a Catholic summer camp at Lake Wawasee. That lawsuit was dismissed in 2009 by Judge Stan Levine.
Funcheon was ordained on May 22, 1965 and removed from ecclesiastical ministry on April 1, 1993. His service included: 1965 – Crosier assignments outside the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend; 1966-1969 – teacher and athletic director, Our Lady of the Lake Seminary, Syracuse, Indiana; 1969-1973 – Crosier assignments outside the diocese; 1973-1975 – teacher/prefect of discipline, Wawasee Preparatory, Syracuse, Indiana; 1975-1987 – Crosier assignments outside the diocese.
Since September the diocese has released the names of 20 priests and deacons who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.
