John Crawford expected to serve as City Council president, mayoral candidate in 2019
City Councilman John Crawford, who this week plans to become a formal Republican candidate in the May Republican mayoral primary, is also expected to be elected council president for 2019 at Tuesday’s annual organizational meeting.
“I was vice president (in 2018), and the vice president usually serves as president the coming year. I haven’t heard of any other possibility,” said Crawford, R-at large. The president runs council meetings and oversees committee appointments.
Businessman Tim Smith has also said he will be a candidate in the GOP primary. Incumbent Democrat Tom Henry, meanwhile, plans to seek a fourth term in November, and no primary challenger has yet materialized.
