Fort Wayne Police Department officers are investigating after a man was stabbed early Wednesday and later died at a local hospital.

Police received a report of a stabbing about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment in the 4900 block of Northcrest Drive, a police report said. When officers arrived, they found a man inside the apartment who appeared to have suffered one or more stab wounds to the abdomen.

Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital in critical condition, but the victim was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, the police report said.

Preliminary information indicates the man was inside an apartment when the stabbing occurred, police reported. Detectives were interviewing potential witnesses who were inside the apartment building at the time of the stabbing. Crime scene technicians also were processing the incident scene and collecting evidence, the police report said.

The Allen County Coroner's office will release the identity of the victim as well as his cause and manner of death. This case remains under investigation by Fort Wayne police, the coroner's office and the Allen County Prosecutor's office.
