A man who pleaded guilty to physically attacking a woman in February was sentenced to prison time for his actions.

Patrick Scheck, 63, of Fort Wayne was sentenced Friday in Allen Superior Court  to serve 11 years in prison for what Allen Superior Judge Fran Gull called the "savage, unprovoked attack" on a woman during the early morning hours of Feb. 15 in the 1500 block of West Main Street.

Scheck received nine years in prison, plus two years on probation, for the attack on the woman — a total stranger — who testified Friday she had to have her face reconstructed and must endure another surgery in a couple of weeks because the plate in her jaw is defective. He received an additional two years in prison for resisting law enforcement.

The woman said she didn't know Scheck when she and her roommate went to a bar for drinks. After her roommate left, the woman said the last thing she remembers about the incident is asking the bartender to call a cab. Paramedics on scene listed her in C condition, very close to dead.

"I was unresponsive," the woman said. "I am a miracle sitting here today."

She said she woke up in a hospital with her face caved in and bruising in both sides of her brain that required surgery and placement of plates inside her face.

Scheck said, "I'm ashamed. That's not me. I'm sorry and I am ashamed."

Defense attorney Quinton Ellis tried to have Gull consider Scheck's military status and mental health status as he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.

Gull said the disorder was not connected to the incident and told Scheck, "This was a savage, unprovoked attack on this woman. She was a total stranger to you."

Scheck was ordered to pay $5,488.08 in restitution for the woman's medical bills, including an estimate for her upcoming jaw surgery. Scheck also was ordered to pay $993.30 in restitution to the city of Fort Wayne Police for a Fort Wayne Police Department officer's treatment.
