Ten years ago, Parkview Health set out on a journey to achieve Magnet Recognition®, and last month that vision became reality. Magnet is the nation's most prestigious honor in nursing excellence, requiring organizations to be in the top quartile and exceed the average level of care in a number of benchmarked areas.

Over the years, our co-workers have proved to be far from average in everything they do, and it is an honor to not only serve alongside you, but to share this accomplishment with you.

Since we learned that each of Parkview's seven hospitals and several other care facilities had been granted Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, we've been able to reflect on the meaning of this accomplishment and the tremendous amount of work that took place to make it happen. We want to celebrate achieving an incredible goal, one shared by only seven percent of hospitals across the country.

As many of our co-workers know, we did not change who we are in order to apply for Magnet status; rather, Magnet is a reflection of the culture we already have in place. Today we would like to acknowledge and thank the nearly 11,000 co-workers who made this possible, because Magnet recognition is the result of your world-class teamwork. Whether you've been a member of the team for years or you recently joined Parkview, the work you do to provide excellent care for every person every day plays an important role in this recognition.

The poet Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” We've reached this milestone but our journey doesn't end here. As we continue to grow as a Magnet-recognized organization, we will have many more opportunities to push ourselves personally and professionally, do the right thing for the communities we serve and uphold and exceed our standards of excellence. We are excited for the next chapter, and hope you are, too. Congratulations to our Parkview family across the region for achieving Magnet recognition, and thank you for your continued dedication to excellence.

Mike Packnett, president & CEO, Parkview Health, and Judy Boerger, chief nursing executive, Parkview Health
