Fort Wayne’s All-Time Greatest Series: Ned Garver, pitcher News-Sentinel names area’s all-time Major League Baseball team

Maybe he never grew up in Fort Wayne, but Garver sure spent a lot of time here, often hitchhiking at least twice a week from his hometown of Nee, Ohio to play games. While playing for the St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics and Los Angeles. Angels, Garver won 10 or more games eight times during his 14-year career that ended in 1961. Garver also became the fifth of only seven pitchers to win 20 games for a last-place club when he won 20 in 1951 for the St. Louis Browns, who lost 102 games. His career record was 127-157 with a 3.73 ERA.
