NS In-Depth: South Adams’ Lexi Dellinger

With some success in her underclass years, Lexi Dellinger of South Adams burst onto the scene last season, leading the Starfires to a long awaited Sectional title and within inches of knocking off Regional champion Central Noble in the morning game of her sophomore season. She culminated her best year yet averaging 17.3 points and three steals per game and being part of The News-Sentinel All-Area team.

As a senior, she’s taken off as the truest of leaders for a South Adams squad ready to make another surge toward upping their goals with a Class 2A Regional title. Dellinger’s steals and assists are up from a year ago as she averages 15 points per contest through mid-December. But her scoring surges have not disappointed, scoring 22 points on two occasions in her first 10 games of the year, both against ACAC opponents Bluffton and Adams Central.

• THE PLAYER — Lexi on Lexi: “Multi sport athlete that always loves to be working toward a goal and I love spending time with friends and family I love because I know it only lasts so long.”

• THE COACH — South Adams’ Brett Freeman on Lexi: “Lexi is an incredible girl that has persevered thru some of life’s tough obstacles. She’s a great teammate that strives to make the other girls better. She’s a true competitor that will do whatever it takes to come out on top. Her hard work over the years has put her in position to be one of the best guards around.”

• THE OPPOSING COACH — Norwell’s Eric Thornton on Lexi: “When we prepare for South Adams, it starts with how we have to both keep Lexi in front of us while also not allowing her rhythm 3’s. That’s an impossible task for a single defender, so then your team is forced to overhelp off their other players. Lexi does a great job of creating open shots for herself and her teammates. It leaves you with a sick feeling as a coach either way.”

• THE EXPERT AMPHIBIAN — News-Sentinel.com’s Shooter on Lexi: “Lexi’s game is played with so much energy and urgency. With a lead or trailing, it is fascinating to watch how Lexi controls her team’s tempo and often the tempo of the game as she gets after it. It makes her dangerous in a multitude of ways, as any good team leader should be.”
