Komets rally to beat Quad City on the road
Jamie Schaafsma’s goal 2:43 into overtime gave the Fort Wayne Komets a 5-4 win over the Quad City Mallards on the road Wednesday night. Fort Wayne rallied from 3-1 and 4-3 deficits to force overtime.
The win is the Komets’ third in a row and their eighth over their last nine games in December. They have won four of their last five road games, have won five in a row against Quad City and are 6-0-1 in their last seven games at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill.
Mason Baptista, Garrett Thompson, Louick Marcotte and Artur Tyanulin scored goals for the Komets, and Ryan Lowney and Jason Binkley each had two assists. Garrett Bartus made 27 saves as the Komets out-shot the Mallards 47-31. The Komets are 14-0 when scoring four or more goals in a game.
The win pulled the Komets to within three points of idle Toledo in the ECHL’s Central Division. Fort Wayne, 16-7-2, has played two fewer games than the Walleye and is three points up on third-place Cincinnati.
The Komets and Mallards will play again Saturday in Fort Wayne after Quad City hosts Cincinnati on Friday.
The Komets were playing without leading scorer Shawn Szydlowski who was sitting out with an unspecified lower-body injury. He’s expected to play Saturday.
