Komets continue spectacular December with road win
Just a month ago, some Fort Wayne Komets fans were asking for major personnel changes after a 5-5-2 start. Tonight, the Komets are going to finish off one of their best months ever.
The Komets improved to 11-2 in December with a 5-0 win at Quad City on Saturday night. Fort Wayne hasn’t had 11 wins in a month since December 2011, and the franchise record is 13 wins set in March 2008 and 2009.
The Komets have won 13 of their last 16 games, have won six of eight on the road and are 7-0-1 over their last eight games at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill. The last-place Mallards continue to struggle, losing their 10th game in a row. Fort Wayne is 5-0 against Quad City this season.
The ECHL’s highest-scoring team, the Komets got two goals from Louicke Marcotte, a goal and two assists from Shawn Szydlowski and a goal and an assist each from Mason Baptista and Garrett Thompson. Goaltender Garrett Bartus made 34 saves for his first shutout of the season. Former Komet Eric Hartzell made 47 saves on 52 shots for the Mallards. Baptista, Szydlowski and Bobby Shea were all plus-3. The Komets are 17-0-0 when scoring at least four goals in a game.
The Komets, 19-8-2, are still three points behind Toledo for first place in the ECHL’s Central Division. The Walleye, who have played two more games than the Komets, beat Wheeling 5-4 on the road Saturday night. The Komets did pull three points up on Cincinnati for second place after the Cyclones lost 2-1 at Indy.
To finish off 2017, the Komets will host Toledo at 7:30 p.m. Fort Wayne is 40-15-5 all-time when hosting the traditional game, but they are 4-7 when hosting a Toledo team to ring out the year. The Walleye won last year 3-1
