Taniece Chapman had 28 points and 16 rebounds and fellow senior Shamari Tyson added 22 points as South Side beat Carroll 83-74 on Saturday to win the SAC Holiday Tournament.

Two years ago, the Archers were handed a 60-point loss by Homestead in the championship game. That lopsided defeat was on the mind of some of South’s players entering this year.

“That was embarrassing,” said Chapman about the 100-40 setback against the Spartans in 2015. “But we used it as fuel.”

South Side (15-0) jumped out to a comfortable lead, but Carroll did not go away. The Chargers got to within two in the third quarter and trailed by as little as five midway through the fourth quarter, but each Carroll push was answered by an Archers counter.

Laney Steckler led the Chargers (10-5) with 23 points, with Kelli Damman added 14.

South Side’s title is the sixth in program history and first since 2013.
