The Notre Dame football program got signed commitments from 21 players from 13 different states last month during the inaugural “early signing period.”

News-Sentinel.com sports reporter Tom Davis has been writing on the Fighting Irish for nearly two decades and is taking a daily look at each recruit leading up to the traditional National Signing Day (Feb. 7).

Here is the second of the 21 recruiting profiles:

PLAYER

Jahmir Smith

DETAILS

Smith is one of seven Fighting Irish recruits to have already enrolled and is now immersed in the off-season program in preparation for spring football in less than two months.

The 5-foot-10, 198-pound running back rushed for nearly 3,000 yards and 67 scores in his final two seasons at Lee County High School in Sanford, North Carolina.

Smith not only had a horde of athletic interest because of his skills, he also possessed the GPA (4.43) to attract interest from eight Ivy League programs, as well. He is the prototypical Notre Dame student-athlete, seeking excellence on and off of the field.

SKILLS

Smith is already almost 200 pounds and brings a physical aspect to the field. He’ll run north/south and break tackles as much as he ever avoids them.

RANKINGS

Smith is rated as the 20th best running back nationally by Rivals and the 16th best player overall from the state of North Carolina.

247Sports ranks Smith as the 26th best back, while ESPN has him rated 36th among the nation’s backs.

COMPETING WITH

It is a positive that Smith enrolled early because Notre Dame needs running backs for spring football after losing three players at that position in the past few weeks.

Josh Adams recently declared for the NFL Draft, while Deon McIntosh and C.J. Holmes were both kicked out of the program earlier this week.

Smith will get reps this spring behind projected starter(s) Dexter Williams and Tony Jones Jr.

BRIAN POLIAN SAYS

“I am a big Jahmir Smith fan,” Notre Dame recruiting coordinator Brian Polian said on National Signing Day last month. “I’m not sure that he got the type of recognition that he deserved.”

“He’s a big, physical back, north and south runner, exceptional student and terrific kid.”
