NS In-Depth: North Side’s Brandan Johnson

Brandan Johnson, a senior at North Side, has achieved a lot during his four years as a varsity starter for the Legends (and Redskins before that). In December, he became the first ever four year starter to finish his Summit Athletic Conference Holiday Tournament career unbeaten with four titles.

From the time he was a freshman, Johnson developed a reputation as being one of the strongest defenders in the area. Not necessarily full of flash, Johnson’s fundamental defense was a catalyst in those many tournament titles as well as a run to the state championship game in Class 4A in 2016. As he continued to develop as a scorer and all around player, Johnson caught the eye of a lot of coaches, eventually signing with Fort Wayne’s own Saint Francis.

• THE PLAYER — Brandan on Brandan: “Humble beast.”

• THE COACH — North Side’s Shabaz Khaliq on Brandan: “BJ is a tremendous young man who has done everything that we have asked of him. He will leave North Side as one of the hardest working players to ever wear a Redskins/Legends uniform. Any challenge that we place in front of him, he accepts without complaint. His game has grown throughout his career here at North. BJ epitomizes what a Legend truly is, we have been blessed to have him.”

• THE OPPOSING COACH — Wayne’s Aaron Rehrer on Brandan: “He is one of the best on ball defenders in the area. I think that he has improved tremendously in his four years at North. His ability to take away a team’s scorer and ability to drive creates opportunities for his teammates.”

• THE EXPERT AMPHIBIAN — News-Sentinel.com’s Shooter on Brandan: “From the moment I saw Johnson play as a freshman, I was enthralled with his defensive potential. You could tell in how he positioned his body and how he moved his hands that he just ‘got it.’ That is something you don’t see in a lot of kids defending the ball in Fort Wayne and certainly not as a freshman. Over the years, it has just gotten better. Brandan Johnson is a difference maker.”
