Gabriel Desjardin’s hat trick leads Komets over Nailers
Gabriel Desjardins scored a hat trick and goaltender Garrett Bartus made 30 saves to win his seventh game in a row as the Komets beat the Wheeling Nailers 7-3 on Saturday night in West Virginia
The win was the Komets’ third in a row and eighth in their last nine games. They’ve also won five of their last six games on the road. The Komets are 14-8-0 on the road and 15-5-2 at home where they have won nine of their last 11 games.
Fort Wayne also got a goal and two assists from Louick Marcotte, a Gordie Howe Hat Trick from Mason Baptista (goal, assist, fight) and two assists each from Dennis Kravchenko, Shawn Szydlowski, Garrett Thompson and Cody Sol. The Komets have out-scored their last nine opponents 24-10, and they have scored at least four goals nine games in a row.
The Komets locked the game up in the third period when Trevor Cheek and Ryan Lowney scored short-handed goals 20 seconds apart. A rookie defenseman, Lowney has scored goals in three consecutive games.
This was Desjardins’ second hat trick of the season, and the fifth by a Komet this season.
Fort Wayne has played nine of its last 13 games away from home, going 9-4. Seven of the next nine games will be played at Memorial Coliseum, starting Wednesday against Wichita, and then the Komets will play eight of 10 games on the road before playing five of nine at home to end the regular season.
The win kept the Komets two points behind Toledo for the ECHL Central Division lead. The Walleye won 4-2 at Indy on Saturday night. The Fort Wayne has still played one fewer game than Toledo.
