2018 Notre Dame Football Recruit Profile: Jarrett Patterson

2018 Notre Dame football offensive lineman signee Jarrett Patterson

The Notre Dame football program got signed commitments from 27 players from 13 different states during the two “signing periods” this winter.

News-Sentinel.com sports reporter Tom Davis has been writing on the Fighting Irish for nearly two decades and is taking a daily look at each recruit.

Jarrett Patterson

DETAILS

The Irish made a late push to land the former Arizona State commit out of Southern California and had to overcome a couple of obstacles to do so.

Patterson was considering both the Fighting Irish, as well as Michigan and UCLA, but the Irish also had the fact that they lost their highly-respected offensive line coach (Harry Hiestand) to the Chicago Bears to deal with.

Coach Brian Kelly, recruiting coordinator Brian Polian and new Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn all took part in the late home visit and secured the commitment from the four-star recruit out of Mission Viejo High School on the night before National Signing Day.

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman has the versatility to play multiple spots along the line and Quinn explained recently that he planned to look at Patterson in that regard.

SKILLS

Patterson has played in a very strong high school program and has the length and frame to one day excel for Notre Dame. Both Kelly and Quinn spoke recently of his athleticism and versatility, which bolsters the depth of the line when a guy can fill a number of positions on either side.

RANKINGS

Patterson was regarded as one of the most talented offensive linemen anywhere, let alone the talent-rich state of California.

247Sports had him listed as the 25th best offensive tackle nationally and 46th best player overall from his home state.

He was a 2017 Los Angeles Times Football All-Star and First team All-Orange County.

COMPETING WITH

More than likely, Patterson will benefit from 15 months of work on the practice field and weight room before he gets thrown into the mix in the fall of 2019, but each offensive lineman should be reevaluated by a new position coach. Notre Dame did have three linemen leave for the NFL/graduation.

Only Sam Mustipher (center) is probably an absolute lock to be where he was last season.

Senior Alex Bars and young players Tommy Kraemer, Robert Hainsey, and Aaron Banks each come back, as do Liam Eichenberg and Josh Lugg.

The Irish have depth and a decent amount of experience returning from the Joe Moore Award-winning unit.

JEFF QUINN SAYS

“I feel really good about my ability to read body language,” Quinn said of recruiting Patterson, “and look into a person’s eyes and see their soul. I felt like there was a connection there. He just needed to know who I was and how I was going to be able to train and develop him into the type of player that he wants to become.

“Football is in his blood. He comes from a championship football program. I had my iPad out in his living room and we were talking about football and he didn’t want to talk about anything else at that point, which was great. For me personally, to have that ability to really demonstrate to him, show him and communicate to him, who we are and what Notre Dame can do for him and what he can do for Notre Dame that was a huge, huge get for us.”
