2018 Notre Dame Football Recruit Profile: Lawrence Keys

2018 Notre Dame football wide receiver signee Lawrence Keys

The Notre Dame football program got signed commitments from 27 players from 13 different states during the two “signing periods” this winter.

News-Sentinel.com sports reporter Tom Davis has been writing on the Fighting Irish for nearly two decades and is taking a daily look at each recruit.

PLAYER

Lawrence Keys

DETAILS

The Irish had to be patient in order to eventually wait for the speedster out of New Orleans to make up his mind on which college to play for.

Keys had offers from Texas, Houston and SMU, but elected to head north and become just the third current Notre Dame player from the very talent-rich state of Louisiana.

He has a strong relationship with his mother, according to Notre Dame receivers coach Del Alexander, and her graduating from college last fall gave Keys a sign of importance in terms of academics.

SKILLS

Keys doesn’t bring great size (5-foot-11, 170 pounds), but he does bring elusiveness after the catch and pure speed to the field.

He has the athleticism to contribute not only at receiver, but also on special teams.

RANKINGS

Both 247Sports and SEC Country had Keys listed as the 10th best player from Louisiana, while he also earned Class 4A First Team All-State honors.

COMPETING WITH

The Notre Dame pass-catchers will be versatile in how they attack opposing defenses.

The Irish have plenty of size and in guys like Keys, speed, as well.

The group has some experience in veterans Chase Claypool and Miles Boykin, as well as a deep, physical, and talented tight end group, some of whom can line up in a multitude of formations.

Notre Dame will be without five of its top nine pass-catchers from the 2017 roster next fall, so Keys will have an opportunity to show what he can do quickly.

Other Irish receivers include Michael Young Jr., Jafar Armstrong, Chris Finke, and Javon McKinley.

DEL ALEXANDER SAYS

“Lawrence has a lot of grit. He’s a playmaker. He is different. He is different in a lot of ways. He is different on and off the field and that is what stood out to me. He is his own individual person and I think that he wants to be different than some of the people (in New Orleans area) or the environment that you see there.

“For the most part, he has been raised by his mom, who graduated from college this past fall. She has been kind of his role model. Because of her guidance, he has been able to be different and to be someone that can come from Louisiana to Notre Dame and have a tremendous amount of success.”
