IHSAA state wrestling meet: Fort Wayne-area competitors to watch
Carroll and Central Noble will lead the area contingent with four wrestlers apiece competing in the high school state finals this Friday and Saturday in Indianapolis.
New Haven’s Jaxson Savieo and Jay County’s Gaven Hare and Mason Winner will try to use semistate championships to propel them to even greater heights.
Here is a look at the Fort Wayne-area wrestlers scheduled to compete at the state finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Indianapolis. First round starts at 6 p.m. Friday, with quarterfinals and semifinals beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, consolations matches at 5 p.m. Saturday and finals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday:
106 pounds: Wyatt Miller, South Adams (37-1). Miller lost for the first time this season in a 10-6 decision in the semistate championship against Goshen’s Fernando Flores.
113 pounds: Brayden Shearer, Garrett (46-2); Kade Zadylak, Norwell (33-5); Joe Just (33-13), Carroll. Shearer took second place at semistate, Zadylak third and Just fourth.
120 pounds: Ian Heath, Leo (41-5); Logan Mosser, Adams Central (42-5); Zane Standridge, Carroll (21-4). Heath, a freshman, was second at semistate, Mosser third and Sandridge fourth.
126 pounds: Tanner Schoeff, Central Noble (40-3); Kyle Lawson, Bellmont (30-12). Schoeff finished second at semistate to Elkhart Memorial’s Christian Mejia. Lawson took third.
132 pounds: Rickey Haught, Huntington North (37-8). Haught finished fourth at semistate.
138 pounds: Austin Moore, Central Noble (41-3). Moore took third at semistate.
145 pounds: Giran Kunkle, Central Noble (41-4); Jon Ruble, Bellmont (30-7). Kunkel took second to Yorktown’s undefeated Christian Hunt at semistate. Ruble took third.
152 pounds: Joel Arney, Carroll (33-4); Jackson Pettigrew, Columbia City (33-15). Arney was third and Pettigrew fourth at semistate.
160 pounds: Mason Winner, Jay County (44-2); Chandler Woenker, Bishop Luers (40-3); Hunter Reed, Columbia City (42-1); Ethan Hicks, Carroll (37-10). Winner took a 3-0 decision over Woenker to win the semistate. Reed was third and Hicks fourth.
170 pounds: Brady Wyo, Homestead (39-3). Wyo finished fourth at semistate.
182 pounds: Jonyvan Johnson, New Haven (37-2). Johnson took third at semistate.
195 pounds: Jaxson Savieo, New Haven (43-1); Draven Rasler, West Noble (44-2). Saveio won in a fall over Rasler in the semistate championship match.
220 pounds: Gaven Hare, Jay County (38-7); Levi Leffers, Central Noble (42-2); Chandler Schumm, Adams Central (44-4); Isaiah Baumgartner, South Adams (17-7). Hare won in a fall over Leffers for the semistate title, Schumm was third and Baumgartner fourth.
285 pounds: Dakota Ault, North Side (25-2). Ault took fourth at semistate.
