DeKalb’s Leigha Brown named Indiana All-Star
DeKalb senior Leigha Brown was named to the Indiana All-Star team on Tuesday evening, capping a stellar senior season for the Barons.
The announcement came as little surprise as Brown was an Indiana Junior All-Star last season and was recently named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association All-State Supreme 15 for the senior class. Brown finished with 28 points, 11.5 rebounds and five assists per contest for DeKalb as a senior.
She is one of thirteen Indiana All-Stars. The other All-Stars are Angel Baker of Pike, Jenasae Bishop of East Chicago Central, Mackenzie Blazek of Whiteland, Nia Clark of Ben Davis, Amy Dilk of Carmel, Katlyn Gilbert of Heritage Christian, Cassidy Hardin of Center Grove, Emily Kiser of Noblesville, Anna Newman of Evansville North, Tomi Taiwo of Carmel (who once played at Homestead), Kayana Traylor of Martinsville and Michaela White of Pike.
Locally, she will go down as one of the best scorers ever. Brown’s 1,798 career points places her ninth all-time in area scoring while she became her school’s all-time leading scorer passing MaChelle Joseph. Brown’s 53 point outing on November 3, 2017 against Lakeland is tied for the eighth best single game in area history and was the first 50-plus point game for a female in the area since Joseph’s 57 point game in 1988.
Of the 15 reported 30-plus point games on the girls side this season in the area, Brown had nine of those games. Brown was also a member of The News-Sentinel’s preseason Fabulous Five and was First Team All-Northeast 8.
The 2018 Indiana Miss Basketball will be announced from within the group of All-Stars on April 29. The Junior-Senior exhibition game is set for June 6 at a site to be announced. The first game against Kentucky will be June 8 in Kentucky at a site to be announced. The final game against Kentucky will be June 9 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
East Noble coach DeAnn Booth will serve as an assistant coach for the All-Star team.
