Komets injury updates

Bobby Shea

As they head into a three-game road trip to the East Coast, the Komets are taking 18 players with them, including 10 forwards and six defensemen.

Bobby Shea has a concussion, though he feels better today, according to Komets General Manager David Franke. Mason Baptista (groin) and Justin MacDonald (concussion) are also not going on the road trip, but Dan Maggio has reported and is ready to play which will help on the blueline.

“If we need some help out East, there are a lot of (college) teams that are done playing and it’s easier finding somebody out there when we’re out there,” Franke said.

Defenseman Brandon Lubin has been released and is on his way back to Evansville of the SPHL.

Komets captain Jamie Schaafsma is still on injured reserve along with Ryan Culkin (hand) and Cody Sol (elbow). The Komets are also placing MacDonald on IR later this afternoon.

Schaafsma is battling an abdominal strain, Franke said.

“He’s feeling a lot better, but we’re just trying to give him time off to get it better,” Franke said. “We’re going to do an MRI to make sure nothing is torn. He is improving every day, but he still feels it somewhat when he skates.”

There’s no word yet on when goaltender Michael Houser may be coming back from Tucson of the AHL.
