The Komets will play Game 3 of the ECHL’s Kelly Cup Western Conference Finals tonight without their best player. League Most Valuable Player Shawn Szydlowski will sit out due to an undisclosed lower-body injury. The team placed Szydlowski on reserve today, according to the ECHL transactions.

His status for the rest of this series is officially day-to-day, but Szydlowski said he’s starting to feel better and hopes to play in Friday’s Game 4.

The league’s leading scorer during the regular season with 79 points, Szydlowski has struggled physically during the postseason but is still averaging a point per game with three goals and 13 points in 13 games. He’s tied for fourth among ECHL playoff scorers.

Szydlowski, 26, has been battling injuries all season, particularly late in the second half. He had no shots on goal in Game 1 of this series, and four in Game 2 despite sitting out the third period on Sunday.

The Komets also placed rookie Phelix Martineau on reserve (ankle) and activated Trevor Cheek and Artur Tyanulin.

The Colorado Eagles are also playing without leading scorer J.C. Beaudin who has an undisclosed upper-body injury.
