Angola boater Heath Wagner wins FLW Bass Fishing League tournament in Michigan
Angola boater Heath Wagner cashed in big with his bass fishing skills at a tournament in Harrison Township, Mich., last weekend.
Wagner caught a five-bass limit weighing 28 pounds, 15 ounces to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League Michigan Division tournament on Lake St. Clair. He earned $5,731 with the win.
The win was Wagner’s fifth in the Bass Fishing League competition of the FLW (Fishing League Worldwide).
“I fished the Belle River hump area of Lake St. Clair,” Wagner said in an FLW news release. “It’s close to the same area where some of the FLW Tour event leaders fished. The area was about one square mile in size, and had a mega school of fish.”
Wagner said he started in a spot where the closest competitor was about a half-mile away.
“I had four areas that were similar and I basically just circled them,” Wagner said in the release. “I’d catch three to 20 fish in a location and kind of wear it out before moving on to the next one. There was a stretch where I caught 20 fish in a row between 4½ and 5 pounds but didn’t even weigh any of them. It was pretty ridiculous.”
Wagner’s also won for heaviest bass, bringing one that weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces. The Boater Big Bass award was $725.
The rest of the boaters in the Top 10 were Dan Mittlestat of Woodhaven, Mich., Kyle Greene of Ortonville, Mich., David Reault of Livonia, Mich., John Devries of Fishers, Joshua Barr of Stow, Ohio, Codea McCathran of Mansfield, Ohio, Clayton Reitz of Morton, Ill., Alex Newman of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Ronald Nutter of Saint Louisville, Ohio.
