THE PIGSKIN PROPHET: Tips to count down the days until prep football opening night
Loyal readers of The Pig know we’re in Countdown Mode here at News-Sentinel.com.
We’ve unveiled the bulk of our Top 15, including No. 4 Leo today. And we’re drawing ever closer to The Pig’s favorite holiday: High school football opening night. It’s not a holiday, you say? That’s truly a crime. If some enterprising young lawmaker finds a way to put it to a ballot vote, he or she would guarantee reelection, regardless of party! And guarantee a party!
Here are some Pig-approved ways to spend the next week counting down to popcorn, marching bands, hot dogs (turkey-based, please) and football:
Seven Days to Go (today)
Go see a scrimmage. There are some fun, controlled, almost-like-a-game affairs tonight. The Pig, in fact, is heading out to Monroeville, site of many of his old friends in the Gridiron Grillers, to see the ‘Busco Eagles take on the Heritage Patriots on their slick new turf field. Both teams will be itching to hit. But there’s a ton of other scrimmages to choose from for your Friday Night Lights preview.
Six Days to Go (Saturday)
Mow the lawn while trying to figure out which of the top three Northeast 8 Conference teams will finish first this year. East Noble, Leo and New Haven tied for the crown a year ago. East Noble has a new QB in Bailey Parker, who The Pig hears is a stick of dynamite ready to explode onto the prep scene. Leo has the big man, Jayden Elwood, who is a bad, bad dude in the best sense of the word. He makes things happen. Then there’s New Haven, with the multitalented Kentrel Thomas, always on the verge of taking it to the house.
Five Days to Go (Sunday)
On this holiest of days, take some time out to give thanks to the one who made our lives worthwhile, Walter Camp. Who’s Walter Camp? Come on, he’s known as “The Father of American Football,” much as The Pig is known as “The Brother-in-law of The Four Hot Dog Halftime Meal.”
Four Days to Go (Monday)
Your Monday might just be distracted a bit, as The Pig and his colleagues at News-Sentinel.com unveil the area’s No. 1 team, the Preseason All-Area Team and the results of our Preseason Player of the Year fan voting. Yours in swine doesn’t like to brag, but these features might be the first reason ever to look forward to a Monday.
Three Days to Go (Tuesday)
Now is the day you need to spend at John Harrell’s site, looking through the prep football schedules, picking out a Week 1 game to attend. The good ones are everywhere, including Wayne at Bishop Dwenger, Woodlan at Leo, DeKalb at Angola (at Trine) and Carroll at Bishop Luers, just to name a few. If you don’t have a connection to any specific school, take some time and map out a week-by-week strategy to see how many teams you can see in nine weeks’ time. Hint: The Pig will probably be hitting the very telling battle between the Generals and Saints.
Two Days to Go (Wednesday)
Take a close look at The Pig’s picks for Week 1 and see if you disagree with any of them. Then acknowledge the errors of your ways!
One Day to Go (Thursday)
Friday is finally starting to come into sight, so you need to check and see if you have all the essentials needed to enjoy Fridays: 1. The Pig’s Twitter feed; 2. One of those soft bleacher seats (it’s a long season ahead); 3. A love for the big uglies on the offensive and defensive line. Some Pig favorites include Joe Tippmann of Dwenger, Damon Kaylor of Huntington North, Will Swartz of Snider and Isaac Meyer of Woodlan, who is also a receiver (The Pig kids you not!).
It’s finally here next Friday and if you don’t have a destination, let The Pig give you a heads up: As the first of East Allen County Schools’ “Thank You Community Nights,” the Woodlan at Leo game comes with free admission! Free football? What’s better than that? Think of the extra hot dogs you could buy. This party is about to get started.
