Toledo, Kalamazoo and Indy play only 10 times in Fort Wayne

Tuesday, May 16, 2017 02:50 pm

Because there's no perfect formula and the Mountain Division teams are spread out geographically, whenever the ECHL puts out a schedule there are problems. That's partly because the league's board of governors announce division alignments after the schedule is released. It's almost as if the divisions are irrelevant to the overall schedule.

As an example, that's why the Komets ended up playing North Division cohorts Tulsa twice and Wichita once last season. How does that make sense?

The 2017-18 schedule which was released Tuesday is simply ridiculous. Because of history and proximity, the Komets' three biggest division rivals are Toledo, Kalamazoo and Indy, but Fort Wayne fans will have to go on the road to see enough games against those foes.

The Komets play Toledo at home only four times and none of those are after Dec. 31. They don't play Kalamazoo at home until Jan. 3, and then play the Wings only three times at home. They play Indy only three times at home, none after Feb. 14.

It's like the league used last season's slate as a blueprint to build this schedule.

Toledo and Fort Wayne are the ECHL's closest rivals in terms of mileage, basically 100 miles apart, yet the Walleye played in Fort Wayne only twice last season, on Dec. 31 and April 5. Kalamazoo didn't play in Fort Wayne after Feb. 17. Indy didn't play here after Feb. 10.

The Komets play Kansas City (formerly Missouri) at home four times next season. The Mavericks are lovely people, but they are part of the Mountain Division yet play more often in Memorial Coliseum than the Komets' division rivals. How does that make sense?

Including Cincinnati, which will likely move back into the North Division, the Komets have 19 home games against true division foes Toledo, Indy, Kalamazoo, Quad City and Cincinnati. They have 22 road games against those teams. With only five games against Wichita and Tulsa, it's impossible to call them legitimate division opponents.

There are a couple of things to like in the home schedule, including a two-game series with Allen and a two-game series with Fort Wayne-native Brian Gratz's Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

After also being here for Thanksgiving, Toledo comes in to be what is becoming a traditional New Year's Eve opponent.

Granted, every team's home schedule is personal to their fans, but the last two have made little sense for the Komets' faithful. It is a ridiculously difficult job to put together a schedule, but there has to be some common sense to it.

Is it too much to ask to see your biggest rivals play in Fort Wayne more than non-division opponents?
