Fort Wayne’s All-Time Greatest Series: Fred Arrington, defense News-Sentinel names area’s all-time college football team
It’s possible no one from Fort Wayne ever had a better senior season than Arrington who was a Northrop product. Along with three interceptions and a school-record four fumble recoveries, Arrington had 182 tackles that season that ranks No. 2 on the Purdue all-time list, and he was named the Boilermakers’ Most Valuable Player. Also noteworthy, he made the tackle against Notre Dame quarterback Gary Forystek in 1977 that eventually led to a backup named Joe Montana getting his chance to play. Arrington was drafted by Detroit in the 10th round of the 1978 draft, and played briefly for the Lions and Jets.
