South Bend rallies late to beat TinCaps

The South Bend Cubs scored four runs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and went on to beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 7-2 Tuesday night at Parkview Field. It was the second straight game South Bend beat Fort Wayne. The third and final game of the three-game set was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. this morning.

Fort Wayne got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the third inning. Brad Zunica led off the inning with a walk followed by a single by Marcus Greene Jr. A sacrifice bunt by Rod Boykin advanced the runners to second and third. Jack Suwinski’s single to center drove in Zunica but Greene was thrown out at the plate by center fielder D.J. Wilson. Reinaldo Ilarraza singled to advance Suwinski to third but Fernando Tatis Jr. grounded out to end the inning.

South Bend finally got to Fort Wayne starter Will Headean with a run in the fifth to tie the score at one. Fort Wayne responded immediately with a run in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead at 2-1. The TinCaps were the beneficiary of two walks and a fielding error to tally the run.

The Cubs scored again in the top of the sixth to tie the score 2-2. Headen was done pitching for the evening after giving Fort Wayne a solid outing. The left hander allowed two runs in six innings with five strikeouts.

Wilmer Torres relieved Headean to start the seventh and allowed four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Louis Distasio finished the game on the mound for the TinCaps and allowed one run in 21/3 innings.

Suwinski had two of the five hits for Fort Wayne. The others were by Ilarraza, Greene and Hudson Potts.

Kevonte Mitchell had three hits and two runs scored for South Bend.
