Bishop Dwenger golfer Logan Ryan named 2018 News-Sentinel Boys Golfer of the Year

The topic of sports specialization in high school is a hot one these days, with many of the opinion that diversification is the right way to go for young athletes. Not so for Logan Ryan. In his first two years at Bishop Dwenger, Ryan participated in two sports — football and golf. On the surface, the schedule doesn't seem to have many conflicts, with football in the fall and golf in the spring. The ...

FOCUS 2018: Mercantile on Main eyes completion of depot renovation, growth on Main St.

If Pam Michel has learned anything over the years, it is to not set a timetable to complete projects. When Pam and her husband Bob Michel, owners of Mercantile on Main at 1753 W Main St., acquired what is to believed to be an old train depot from ARCH in 2012, they hoped a full restoration would only take a few years. But life tends to get in the way sometimes. While the depot is looking much better ...

RUOFF AT INDY: Mark Music looks back at seventh-place finish, eyes efforts to "do more" with Andretti Autosport in '19

SPEEDWAY — It was nearly a record-breaking day in terms of heat at Sunday's Indianapolis 500, but Ruoff Home Mortgage President/CEO Mark Music had bigger things to focus on than the 90-plus degree temperatures. Music spent the race atop the pit stand of Carlos Muñoz, the driver at the wheel of the Ruoff Home Mortgage Honda with Andretti Autosport. Team owner Michael Andretti, who directed Muñoz's month ...

RUOFF AT INDY: Can Carlos Muñoz win the Indianapolis 500 from 21st starting spot?

Can Carlos Muñoz win Sunday's Indianapolis 500? Sure. Is it likely? Well, history says otherwise. Muñoz's starting position of 21st has produced just one other Indy 500 winner, the co-driving team of Lora Lawrence Corum and Joe Boyer way back in 1924. In addition, only two drivers in the last 82 years have won the race starting 20th or worse — Al Unser Sr. from 20th in 1987 and Johnny Rutherford ...

JUSTIN KENNY: Why did Shabaz Khaliq leave North Side for Richmond?

Last year, the month of May experience at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Ruoff Home Mortgage and its president/CEO Mark Music was condensed into a whirlwind week-long blitz. Honor Flight Northeast Indiana always in search for more volunteers and veterans

In J.M. Flagg's infamous recruiting poster released in the thick of World War I, Uncle Sam's emphatic finger point with the phrase "I Want YOU for the U.S. Army" was ingrained into the memory of the generations of people that fought in World War I and World War II. Decades later, Honor Flight Northeast Indiana and its president Dennis Covert feel as if they are following that memorable phrase, continuing ...

THE PUB CRAWL: J K O'Donnell's Irish Ale House

We've all been there. Well, at least those who care to read this bi-weekly column. Bar hopping with friends in the heyday of your youth, you inevitably landed at J K O'Donnell's once or twice or a couple dozen times. Or if you've been there for St. Patrick's Day, it may only feel like you've been there a couple dozen times. The downtown pub at 121 West Wayne Street has only been around 11 years, but ...
