Miss Indiana 2012, MerrieBeth Cox, will speak and demonstrate twirling at 6 p.m. Sunday in Rhinehart Recital Hall, Rhinehart Music Center at IPFW, 2101 Coliseum Blvd. E.

Cox was crowned Miss Indiana in June of 2012. As her platform, she chose to speak to girls about surviving bullying, overcoming obstacles and her personal obstacles. She hopes to encourage other girls to overcome their obstacles and to accomplish their personal goals.

During her years as a student at Purdue University, Cox was named to the dean’s list and fulfilled the role of the 27th Golden Girl with the Purdue Marching Band. She will perform a twirling routine for the audience so they can see the talent that earned her the role of Golden Girl. Cox held various other leadership positions while on campus.

While young, Cox was told she could never succeed as a twirler due to impaired hearing. She proved them wrong. Not only did she earned the position of Golden Girl at Purdue, she also qualified for the National Baton Twirling Competition since age 3.

She earned positions on the USA World Baton Twirling Team and won silver and bronze medals at the World Baton Twirling Competition. She was also a three-time winner of Miss Majorette of America.

As Miss Indiana, Cox represented our state in the 2012 Miss America Pageant. As a student at Purdue, she will receive her bachelor of science degree in physical education this May.

Miss Indiana’s visit to Fort Wayne is sponsored by the Purdue Club of Fort Wayne and the Miss Indiana student organization at IPFW.

After Cox’s presentation, guests can take photos with her, receive an autographed photo of her, and enjoy snacks and refreshments. All are invited to attend and admission is free.
