The local organization known as Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home has shortened its name to Visiting Nurse in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of this service and to clarify the services it provides, a news release said.

The organization traces its roots to 1888 when the local Ladies’ Relief Union passed out food to the poor, a news release said. Two years later, the organization expanded its services and renamed itself the Visiting Nurse Committee.

The recent name change to Visiting Nurse will make it easier to identify some of the agency’s programs: Hospice Home, Hospice Care, Palliative Care and Grief Support, the news release said.

Visiting Nurse also has redesigned its website, www.vnfw.org.

The agency will offer three upcoming free programs from 5-7:30 p.m. at its offices and hospice home, 5910 Homestead Road. A light supper will be served; call 435-3222 to make reservations.

* Tuesday: “What do I do now …,” on surviving the death of a spouse or significant other.

* April 17: “Separation Through Deployment or Death of a Soldier,” including a panel of parents whose children have been deployed.

* May 28: “Sibling Loss,” on coping with the death of a brother or sister
