FAMILY BONDING: Columbia City father-son duo arrested with 16 pounds of drugs
A father and son from Columbia City were arrested earlier this week with quite the collection.
Gerald L. Tyrell Sr., 54, and Gerald Tyrell Jr., 29, were taken into custody on Monday after search warrants on two properties executed by the Indiana State Police, Columbia City Police Department and the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department uncovered 12 pounds of marijuana, four pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms, multiple firearms and more than $14,000.
“We continue to see outstanding teamwork between law enforcement in our collective effort to stop the flow of illegal drugs into our communities,” said Whitley County Prosecutor D.J. Sigler in a release. “(Monday) we kept a significant amount of drugs from making it onto our streets and into our schools.”
The raid followed an investigation by Indiana State Police and the United States Postal Inspector. Earlier this month, officials intercepted what was believed to be a significant amount of marijuana being sent through the mail and then tracked the package to its destination. That investigation led to the team of Tyrells.
Tyrell Sr. was charged with a trio of felonies — dealing in a control substance, dealing in marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance. He remains in the Whitley County Jail on $150,000 bond.
Tyrell Jr. has been charged with the felony of aiding in dealing marijuana and a pair of misdemeanors — possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. The son has since posted $15,000 bond.
An initial hearing for the duo will be held on Monday.
