Groundbreakings are planned for two major health-care facilities in Fort Wayne.

Lutheran Health Network will host a groundbreaking ceremony for Lutheran Downtown Hospital on Wednesday, July 17, at 1 p.m. in the Van Buren Street parking lot directly west of St. Joseph Hospital.

IU Health, meanwhile, will break ground on Thursday, June 20, for a 25,000-square-foot facility at Stellhorn and Lahmeyer Roads in northeast Fort Wayne. The facility will open next year and include primary care offices, medical imaging services, lab services, urgent care and community space. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Lutheran Downtown Hospital will be five stories and contain about 188,000 square feet. The new hospital is expected to be completed in late 2021 and open for patient care in early 2022, consisting of 60 inpatient beds with room to grow to 100.

Situated at the southwest corner of Main and Van Buren, Lutheran Downtown will be constructed in an area of the existing campus currently designated for physician and employee parking. The hospital’s main entrance will be on Van Buren facing east.

St. Joseph Hospital has provided patient care continuously since it opened in 1869.
