Tuesday is ‘National Voter Registration Day’

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Fort Wayne Area League of Women Voters will host a National Voter Registration Day event at Purdue Fort Wayne Helmke Library, 2010 E. Coliseum Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of a 50-state effort to register thousands of voters. League members will also have a voter registration table at the Fort Wayne Municipal Candidate’s Forum hosted by the Voter Initiative Coalition Monday, Sept. 23, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the downtown Allen County Library.

Local candidate information also can be found on the LWV sponsored Vote411.org website. Voters can receive customized information about how/where to vote and what candidates say about their priorities.

National surveys indicate that 40 percent of Americans are not aware that they need to update voter registration when they move or change their name. Voters must also have a current photo ID issued by the state of Indiana or U.S. government that conforms to the voter’s registration record. Student IDs issued by state universities are acceptable if they meet the criteria, including expiration date. Visit indianavoters.com before the Oct. 7th voter registration deadline to make sure you are eligible to vote.

A non-partisan event, National Voter Registration Day was started in 2012.
