Illegal immigrant sentenced for cocaine distribution

Luis Carrera, 45, of Hammond, was sentenced before U.S. District Court Judge Holly A. Brady in Fort Wayne upon his plea of guilty to possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine. Carrera was sentenced to 60 months in prison with four years of supervised release. However, he will be deported upon completion of his federal sentence.

According to documents in this case, Carrera brought a kilogram of cocaine to Fort Wayne from Hammond. During a search of the vehicle driven by Carrera, officers found the cocaine wrapped and concealed in a plastic oil bottle. . Carrera was previously removed from the U.S. for attempted illegal entry and was also on probation in Porter County for dealing Marijuana.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration with the assistance of the Fort Wayne Police Department. The case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey R. Speith.
